List of the Missouri Circuit Courts Print E-mail
The Missouri Constitution (est. 1820) provided for the creation of four circuits, each containing from four to eight counties. The state has since created forty-five judicial circuits.

The Circuit courts are courts of original civil and criminal jurisdiction, and are the first level for all trials in Missouri. Within the divisions of the circuit court there are three levels of jurisdiction:

  1. circuit,
  2. associate and
  3. municipal.

Most circuit judges are elected in Missouri, although judges in some circuits are selected under the Nonpartisan Court plan.

  • Circuit judges serve six-year terms.
  • Associate judges serve four-year terms.
